Hmmmm, another potential grad school....

It's a challenge that most universities face - how to get their students out of bed and into the study hall. Today the University of Salford may have hit upon an effective solution: get Johnny Marr to give the lectures.

The legendary guitarist - whose career has taken him from the Smiths, through Electronic to, most recently, Modest Mouse - has been announced as Salford's new professor of music. Not just an honorary title, Marr's responsibilities will include hosting workshops on the composition and performance of popular music.

Mr. Joyce and Mr. Rourke are right

'Pounding' IS a great song....

Pounding, Doves, from the album The Last Broadcast

Mike Joyce: Pounding is used a couple of times in the DVD [Inside the Smiths] because, like all great Manchester records, it never feels overplayed. It's such a feel-good song, and I love the bass. This song was like the soundtrack to my and Andy's DJing tour of America and reminded us of home

Whimper

I know, I know, don't look back. Especially in anger. But the following sentence reduced me to a quivering fangirl wreck-

With the Verve and the Spice Girls announcing comebacks this week, it's only Abba, the Jam, the Stone Roses and the Smiths resisting the lure to reform.

That's just cruel. I know it's never gonna happen- at least with the Brits on that list. Abba? Well, if the tax evasion issues continue, I wouldn't be real surprised.....

No bitterness here

No sir, none at all...

A new documentary about The Smiths, as told by the band's former rhythm section; Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke, is to be released on DVD next month.

"InsideThe Smiths" tells the history of the band, and describes what it was like working with Morrissey and Johnny Marr. Mike Joyce says the reason he and Rourke have spoken for the first time on camera was that: “We wanted people to know what it was really like. It is more truthful than anything we have revealed in interviews before because we were relaxed with how it was done and who was doing it.”

Interesting

This article talks about major artists that have never had an American #1 album, such as Bowie, Tom Petty, Kiss (well, that's because they're icky), The Who, Ozzy, Neil Diamond, and The Smiths.

As for this at the end-

The Smiths/ Morrissey: Marr's former bandmates — and his former musical foil — must be hella jealous about his recent chart success, because none of them has ever gotten close to sniffing #1 on the top 200. The Smiths' final album, 1987's Strangeways, Here We Come, topped out at #55, and the Mozfather never got higher on the charts than he did with 2004's You Are the Quarry, which debuted at #11. Then again, all that could change if the Smiths would just go ahead and reunite already ... hint, hint.

I have this to say. Nah. Ganna. Happen.

How Soon Is Now?

Salford Lads Club to be given historic status?

Salford Lads Club and the real Coronation Street could soon be given conservation status.

The area they are in, known as the New Barracks estate, was built in the early 1900s and was Salford City Council's first local authority housing scheme.

The authority now wants to protect the area, as it says it has "maintained much of its original architectural appearance and character".

A formal conservation scheme will go out to consultation later this year.

King Monkey, a Smith and a Ryder walk into a bar...

Entitled ‘The World Is Yours’, the former Stone Roses singer is currently recording the new LP with bassist Andy Rourke and guitarist Paul Ryder.

Hold on, Elroy. Paul Ryder plays BASS, not GUITAR. Jesus, can't anyone use the Google?
