Glasto headliner rumors

Like the first blossom of spring or the January sales, the Glastonbury rumours start earlier each year. We're barely the third week into the 2007 and already there are reports suggesting organisers already know the full line-up for the festival, due to take place in Pilton in June.

The website declares that Friday's top billing will be given to The Killers, Saturday's to the Arctic Monkeys (with Kasabian just below them) and Sunday's traditional veteran slot to The Who, with Kaiser Chiefs set to act as their limberer-uppers.

They're not the only bands who are rumoured to be playing Mr Eavis's shindig. Festival favourites the Chemical Brothers are rumoured to be closing the Other Stage on Sunday, while Eric Clapton, Madness, The Kooks and the Scissor Sisters have, like a well-fed cow, also been heavily-tipped.

The festival itself, as is its wont, declined to comment on the line-up speculation, saying it would not do so until the official line-up is announced. Tickets don't go on sale for a while, but the controversial pre-registration process is set to start at the beginning of next month.

In a total straight girl sort of way, of course. I swear, if I wasn't already Separated At Birth from my beloved Joy, I'd definitely be S.A.B. from La Winehouse.

You know how 'soul mates' were discussed on 'Sex and the City'- in the episode that Char said that (paraphrasing) that maybe guys were just to have fun with, and our friends were our actually our true partners?

I feel that way about my friends. I've been truly blessed with my girls, Stacy, Casey, Traci, Carrie, J.Mel and Joy, and my guy, Jimmy. Cursed at love, but compensated with truly unbelievable friends. The Goddess has a way of evening things out.

That being said, I think Amy and I could hang. Seriously, the bitch is fantastic. And so is her eyeliner!

Lily Allen is set to release 'Alfie' as the next single

Although no release date has been announced, Allen has been discussing the video for the track on her Myspace site.

PUSHING 50, Paul Weller shows no sign of mellowing - we hear the singer refused a CBE in last summer's Birthday Honours.

High Fidelity

There are certain books, movies, et al, that hit a bit too close to home for me. That is, they describe my personality perfectly. One of those is High Fidelity. (Both book by Nick Hornby and movie featuring John Cusack).

Kate must love putting up with a bunch of crap. How else could you explain the reason she stays with Pete? He was recently snapped in Germany sneaking around with one of his groupies and during their holiday he was supposedly out trolling for drugs again. Kate, of course had a miserable time on their vacation in Thailand. Oh, and remember that song he was writing for her? It or something like it evidently ended up on a bathroom floor. Boo!

Harper!

This story is freaking awesome. And rather uplifting.

A high school play based on Harper Lee's classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" brought together black and white high school students to tell the classic story of racial injustice — and even drew out the novel's reclusive author.

Wednesday night's invitation-only performance was organized to celebrate diversity and arts education in Alabama, the home state of the novel's author, whose book and the movie made from it won immediate acclaim at a time when Alabama was still rigidly segregated.

This is truly great.

The two public schools near Birmingham are only about 16 miles apart. But Mountain Brook is one of the state's wealthiest communities, with a median home price of about $300,000, while the same figure in Fairfield is about $68,000.

Mountain Brook High draws from an overwhelmingly white suburb, while Fairfield students are from a mostly black district.

The performance has helped the students transcend not only the 30-minute distance between their communities, but a cultural divide as well. Teens who were strangers this time last year are spending hours on the phone, sending each other multiple text messages per day and chatting on the Internet networking site Facebook.

The Montgomery performance was in Troy University's Davis Theater, directly across the street from the bus stop where civil-rights icon Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man 51 years ago.

The symbolism of the location was not lost on Regan Stevens, a 17-year-old Mountain Brook senior who plays Scout, the book's main character in the fictional Southern town of Maycomb during the Depression.

Scout recounts how her father, the lawyer Atticus Finch, fought in vain to save a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman.

"I hate to say life's not fair," Stevens said backstage after lamenting the play's sad, but realistic ending. "But it's just that things are not always where they need to be. The great thing about Harper Lee's novel is that it helps us address that because it shows us the problem areas that we need to work on and that's what the civil rights movement thankfully did."

Girls and the 'Babes

Because of my weakness for U.K. pre-fab girl groups, I'm entirely too excited about this collaboration. However, I'm wondering if they're going to change some of the lyrics a tad.

Girls Aloud and Sugababes have recorded a version of Aerosmith 'Walk This Way' as this year's Comic Relief charity single.

Although neither group has yet commented on the collaboration, it is understood the track is due to be released ahead of this year's Red Nose Day, which is expected to take place on March 16.

The track was produced by TLC producer Dallas Austin. Austin also worked on Sugababes' 2005 album 'Taller In More Ways'.

David Beckham is coming to America.

The 31-year-old English midfielder, weary of the politics and the lack of playing time in Spain with Real Madrid, today agreed to a five-year deal with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer and will join the team when his contract with Real expires on June 30. According to reports in the British news media, the deal includes salary and commercial opportunities worth $250 million.

One of my absolute favorite things are the Celebrity Playlists on iTunes. I love them, and have been known to start liking a band if they have a particularly stunning one- i.e. My Chemical Romance, who had Doves, Blur, Massive Attack, The Stone Roses and THE LA'S!!!

Also, Liv Tyler had a good playlist. Well, she should. Her mom is Bebe Buell and her dad is that woman from Aerosmith, er, Steven Tyler. (I've always been a Joe Perry girl)

Pet peeve? Artists that pick themselves. Kayne West and Mariah Carey, I'm talking to you! If I didn't get to vote for myself for cheerleading captain in 1992 and 1993, you don't get to pick your own song. It's not cool.

Austin Powers IS Keith Moon

'Austin Powers' star Mike Myers has been chosen to play The Who's Keith Moon in a film adaptation of his life.

Myers is set to play the drummer, who died in 1978, in the film 'See Me, Feel Me: Keith Moon Naked For Your Pleasure'.

The film is set to be released in 2009.

The actor was hand picked by Who frontman Roger Daltrey to play the drummer.

Caveat before story-

We are doing an absolutely ginormous wedding this weekend (50+ reception pieces) and a bridal fair, too. So this story might not actually be THAT funny, I just might be mildly hysterical.

My mom and dad are going on vacation at the end of the month to the Dominican Republic. They are very excited, and as upper Midwesterners of German and Swedish descent, a bit concerned about frying up in the tropical sun like a piece of chicken. So, Mom has started tanning- yes, I know it's terrible, but so is getting 3rd degree burns because you are so very chalk-white.

We were working on the flowers for the aforementioned wedding today when Dad came into the shop. He went over to the sink where Mom was conditioning flowers, and asked her, "What are we doing about tanning?" Meaning, he decided he needed to tan.

To truly get how hysterical this is, you need to know that my dad is a tall, skinny man who drives a cement truck for a living. Tanning. Hee hee.

But, the story's not over yet. Our friend, who is a state trooper, came in shortly after hilarity ensued, and joined the discussion. Dad said, "How do you, uh, know if things are getting burned?" Our trooper buddy responded, "Well, if you smell burning hot dogs, get out of the tanning bed."

I just cried.

Noel Gallagher is hoping to make Oasis' most ambitious album in years when the band reconvene in the studio later this year. Though recently explaining that he had four "great" songs left over from the 'Don't Believe The Truth' sessions, the guitarist has told NME.COM that he has expanded his vision for his band's seventh studio album.

I am sincerely hoping this is a new picture of Noel. The sideburns do not appear to be venturing off into Neil Young-ish territory. Seriously, I adore him, but they were truly horrid. This is a massive improvement.

Killers for V

The Killers have been announced as one of the headlining acts for this year's V Festival.

The Las Vegas quartet will headline nights at both the Chelmsford and Staffordshire venues in August, and will also play a set at the Princess Diana Memorial gig at Wembley in July.

The news will almost definitely mean the band are out of the running for the Glastonbury headlining slots, which are yet to be announced.

The Killers and Kasabian were rumored to be Glasto headliners. This leaves the field wide open.

I'll take Arctic Monkeys and Scissor Sisters as Headliners #2 and #3 for $5000, Alex.

I feel no sorrow about the death of Saddam Hussein. He was a truly horrible person, who caused much suffering amongst his people. (Though we helped him maintain his strongman position in the 1980s).

However, I worry about the repercussions of the United States invading another country, capturing, and for all intents and purposes, executing their leader, no matter how awful said leader might be. I don't think we should be opening up that particular can of precedent.

The New York City pop icons selected 17 different organisations to benefit from the profits made from their arena shows.

What Winterbottom’s film seems to be examining among other things is the inevitable tensions between the creation of a youth culture which is dependent upon naivety combined with lashings of energy and enthusiasm and the workings of industry and business. Here, as we see, Factory Records and the Hacienda Club cannot sell out. There is quite literally nothing to sell, instead the idealism is eroded and eventually heavily compromised by the real forces of chaos and anarchy in society the ‘lumpen’ criminal classes.

There is no such thing as a utopian 24 Hour Party in which the workings of the system can somehow be ignored in some utopian space. The criminal classes eventually come to control the door and the massive drug fuelled scene in the Hacienda. The drug scene itself can be seen as a part of the reaction of young people to a ‘no future’ type’ of a culture in which the living is done for today not tomorrow.

Forty years after it was made, The Velvet Underground's first recording has become a financial hit — in cyberspace. Bought for 75 cents four years ago at a Manhattan flea market, the rare recording of music that ended up on the influential New York band's first album, "The Velvet Underground & Nico," sold on eBay for a closing bid of $155,401.

I think the following would go in the "Holy Crap" category-

Warren Hill, a collector from Montreal, bought the record in September 2002 at the flea market, according to an article written by his friend, Eric Isaacson of Mississippi Records in Portland, Ore. in the current issue of Goldmine Magazine.

Isaacson helped Hill decipher the nature of the lucky find.

"We cued it up and were stunned — the first song was not 'Sunday Morning' as on the 'Velvet Underground & Nico' Verve LP, but rather it was 'European Son' — the song that is last on that LP, and it was a version neither of us had ever heard before!" Isaacson wrote.

A strong enough blow to the back of an unsuspecting person's head could result in a vertebral fracture which, I hope most people know, could cause paralysis or even death.

Savage concludes, "Attempt a Donkey Punch and it's likely that your asshole will wind up constricting spasmodically — around your cellmate's cock."^[6]

Festivus is a nondenominational holiday featured in "The Strike" episode of Seinfeld, a popular United States based television sitcom of the 1990s. The holiday was a plot device in the episode, which first aired on December 18, 1997. Many people, influenced or inspired by Seinfeld, now celebrate the holiday, in varying degrees of seriousness. Some do it religiously; others do it with good tidings in their respect to Seinfeld.

According to Seinfeld, Festivus is celebrated each year on December 23, but many people celebrate it other times, often in early December. Its slogan is "A Festivus for the rest of us!!" An aluminium pole is generally used in lieu of a Christmas tree or other holiday decoration, shedding holiday materialism. Those attending participate in the "Airing of Grievances" in which each person tells each and everyone else all the ways they've disappointed him/her over the past year, and after a Festivus dinner, The "Feats of Strength" are performed. Traditionally, Festivus is not over until the head of the household is wrestled to the floor and pinned.

Most of us in the US were introduced to the concept of the 'importance' of the Christmas #1 music single in the UK through the movie, "Love, Actually." This article is quite interesting, but I found this bit particularly true for all music, at holiday time or otherwise....

For all their rabble-rousing punk swagger, meanwhile, The Pogues are best remembered for "Fairy Tale of New York". Held at No 2 in 1987 by the Pet Shop Boys' "Always On My Mind", it has grown into a perennial. Challenged by Elvis Costello to write a Christmas classic, Shane MacGowan's lyrics, finding the remaining sparks of love between a boozing, ageing Irish couple, one possibly dying of alcoholism, allied to Jem Finer's redemptive melody, make a heartbreaking record. It was intended to combat "the torture of packaged party time", Finer told Uncut, and every year its mix of harsh Christmas realism and transcendent romance does just that.

The Pogues proved beyond doubt that Christmas is as rich a time as any to write about, once you fight past clichés; and that you can enter the rhythm of people's lives if you succeed.
