Wellah in NYC

Forget 300 bucks, I'd sell (or seriously consider selling) my soul for tickets.

Paul Weller

Yesterday marked the beginning of what might unofficially be called Paul Weller week here in New York City. The legendary Jam and Style Council frontman (and bona fide personal hero/role model to many) began his three-day invasion of the City via an absurdly anticipated performance last night at Irving Plaza. Outside, tickets were apparently changing hands for $300-$400 and inside a collection of rowdy British expats and thuggish Jerseyites in ill-fitting leather jackets lost their collective minds as Weller played one Jam hit after another. During “That’s Entertainment” we came very close to witnessing a room full of drunk, grown men sobbing.

Tonight Weller will reportedly change the set list to focus more on Style Council material, and Wednesday he will perform rock from his entire career. That final show will most likely reflect the feel of Weller’s new album Hit Parade, which features a well-balanced sampling of the Modfather’s best material. Classic Jam anthems like “Town Called Malice” and “Going Underground” sound as magnificent and brave as ever next to the elegant, clever piano and string pop of Weller’s Style Council years. And then there’s the solo stuff. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the solo inclusions from Hit Parade sound as good as they do. Weller has long been perceived as more than the frontman for one of the most important rock bands ever (as if that weren’t enough) but also as a formidable solo artist and songwriter, and on Hit Parade he reminds us why he’s so worshiped. Tracks like “The Changing Man” and the explosive, confrontational “Come On/Let’s Go,” sound vital and prescient, like he’s a free, wise sage and we’re the lucky disciples.

Born To Rock

Guitars played by Noel Gallagher, Kasabian and Franz Ferdinand will all feature at Europe's largest ever guitar exhibition, which kicks off in London later this week (February 2).

The event, called 'Harrods Rocks', takes place at the Harrods store in Knightsbridge from February 2 until March 3.

The collection includes many rare and extremely valuable guitars, both vintage and modern. Other famous names whose guitars are included in the collection include The Edge, Brian Jones, Keith Richards and Marc Bolan.

There will also be a collection of personally customised guitars from the likes of Neil Young, Bono, Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes, Graham Coxon and Jennifer Lopez.

The exhibition space includes an art exhibition featuring the work of Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood , who will also be staging his own art installation in one of Harrods' main windows.

Further information is available now at Harrods.com.

The Babes and The Girls

New Order- Temptation

Please let me introduce my dual childhood crushes, Bernard "Barney" Sumner- rocking the short-shorts, and Peter "Hooky" Hook- on whom I find the tank top/short ponytail combo irresistible. Only on Barney and Hooky, mind. Anyone else, yeeeech.

May I point out that I was 9 when this was recorded.

And yes, though I was style-challenged, I was a rock-snob before the age of ten.

My other favorites? Ms. Aretha Franklin and The Spinners.

The Undertones- Teenage Kicks

Teenage dreams, so hard to beat.

Kasabian feat Noel Gallagher

Tom, Serge AND Noel? Be still, me fookin' heart.

Johnny Depp with a guitar

OMG, PONIES! Guh!

Popsugar's authors don't know what they're talking about with the eyeliner.

I'm afraid that Jordan Catelano is giving guys-with-eye makeup a bad, asshole-ish name.

Johnnny should always wear eyeliner. And jewelry. And a hat. And be a pirate.

Here's something you don't see everyday. Johnny Depp got down with his old band The Kids at a memorial concert for a Sheila Witkin in Florida this weekend. She was the mother of Johnny's friend guitarist Bruce Witkin and a huge promoter of the South Florida music scene in the 70's and 80's. We're not big fans of actors with bands but we'll give Johnny a break because it's for charity and he spared us from the black eyeliner. Plus, he looks kind of hot.

AL!

I have no idea if Al Franken would be a better senator than Norm Coleman, but he does have several advantages. One, he seems more intelligent than Coleman, two, he's actually from Minnesota, and three, he's intentionally funny, as opposed to accidentally hilarious.

Bill O'Reilly to blow gasket? Al Franken is leaving Air America to explore a run against Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman.

Lovely Dita

Wow, doesn't Dita Von Teese look fantastic? She seems a perfect match for Gaultier.

I'd think that Marilyn would be kicking himself, but he appears to be busy squicking me out by dating barely-legal Evan Rachel Wood.

Dita Von Teese cemented her style icon status this week as she took to the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier's couture spectacular. The retro-loving dancer, who has already appeared in adverts for Vivienne Westwood and fronted a Mac cosmetics campaign, was transformed into a Spanish-style Virgin Mary for the religious themed show in Paris.

Out Of The Sinking

My favorite song off Stanley Road. Well, other than Wings Of Speed. And Changingman.

Also, great shoes, Paul.

What? You changing your tune, Toby Keith? You need to shut the hell up. Dick.

And here's a song dedicated to you. Shithead.

Stay strong,

Ms. Molly. Ann Richards and maybe Molly in one year? Fucking hell.

I think it says a lot as towards her legacy, that upon hearing of her not-so-fantastic-sounding condition, that a random 30 year-old in Iowa broke into tears.

I've read Ms. Ivins since I was in high school, and she's had more to do with the evolution of my political viewpoints than anyone. Bless her.

Liberal Texas columnist Molly Ivins has been hospitalized in her ongoing battle with breast cancer, her assistant said Friday.

La Winehouse

Speaking as a rock snob, we do not compare female singers to "classic Aretha Franklin" lightly. I've had both Frank and Back to Black on near constant rotation for the past week. Amy is unbelievable. Go buy them now already.

(And Hova and Mos were there. Nice, girl).

Live Review: Amy Winehouse, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, New York, 1/16/07

“Mr. Bartender, can I get another amaretto sour?”

UK soul singer/quote machine Amy Winehouse is on stage for her second sold-out show Tuesday night at New York’s Joe’s Pub and looks slightly nervous. Or slightly drunk. Or most likely both.

While currently holding down the #1 album in the UK with Back to Black, Winehouse marked her live debut stateside with a brilliant set that showcased a singer who seems to thrive on contradiction. Her demeanor is equal parts uneasy and confident. Her personality, depending on when you get her, ranges from innocent angel to vulgar devil. And her soulful, resonant vocals, recalling jazz legends Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, belie the oftentimes hysterical, irreverent lyrics. (Her album is probably the first #1 album to include the word “Fuckery,” and a chorus about refusing rehab for alcohol abuse.) In stark contrast to her lyrics, the music backed tonight by deep funk & soul group The Dap-Kings, conjures up images of both a Phil Spector production and the musical lockstep of a house band that sounds like they’ve been playing together for decades.

Despite the inevitable comparisons Winehouse will receive to contemporaries like Norah Jones or Diana Krall, it’s doubtful either singer will write songs dedicated to Nas, as Winehouse does on show highlight, “Me and Mr. Jones.” “I don’t take my Nas or my Mos Def lightly,” she tells the crowd, the latter of which took in the early show along with URB cover star Mark Ronson. On slower tracks like “Just Friends,” Winehouse recalls classic Aretha Franklin and, if her nervousness was evident between tracks, it was nowhere to be found in her melismatically-enhanced singing voice.

Dressed in a slinky, black cocktail dress, with hair in bouffant, 1960s girl group style, Winehouse performed virtually the entire Black album and, while singing, currently has three moves:

1. The shifting, if not slightly awkward, alternating of weight from one leg to the other while lifting up one side of her skirt

2. The crouch into a “baseball catcher” position

3. The slight bend of her knees while looking upward

Regardless of her actions-- singing, sipping amaretto sours and chewing gum between (and sometimes during) songs all were equally employed -- her presence was undeniable; A goth girl meets 50s pinup who, despite claims of nervousness bolstered by stutter-heavy banter between songs, always warranted the attention.

“Anyone here from Universal, get me more gigs,” she yells mid-set to no one in particular. “Just wheel me on stage.”

If the states embrace her like her home country, she’ll get her wish.

Set list:

1. Addicted

2. Just Friends

3. Cherry

4. Back to Black

5. Wake Up Alone

6. Tears Dry On Their Own

7. He Can Only Hold Her/Doo Wop (Lauryn Hill Cover)

8. F**k Me Pumps

9. You Know I’m No Good

10. Rehab

11. Me and Mr. Jones

11. Love is a Losing Game

12. Valerie (Zutons Cover)

Most people reach a point in their career where they just need a clean break, a chance to try something new and spread their wings. That's exactly where Paul Weller was in 1982, when he shut the door on the Jam, a U.K. phenomenon that was finally making inroads in the States with the single "Town Called Malice."

Twenty-five years later, Weller is returning to the Jam canon for two immediately sold-out stands in New York and Los Angeles that mark the 30th anniversary of the Jam's debut album, "In the City." In both cities, he is playing three shows. On the first night, he's playing an entire Jam set, with the second dedicated to his post-Jam act the Style Council and the third to his solo catalog.

The dates are more blatantly meant to promote a new string of retrospectives on the indie Yep Roc label, all sharing the title "Hit Parade." Arriving on January 23 was the first single-disc U.S. collection to span Weller's entire career, encompassing Jam favorites, the hits of the Style Council and the highlights of his celebrated solo career. "Hit Parade" was also issued as a four-disc box collecting every solo, Jam and Style Council single. On February 6, a two-DVD, career-spanning set also bearing the same name will be released featuring all of Weller's videos, plus rare performances by the Jam.*

I hear echoes of the following in interviews with many Brit musicians. Music really is a universal language. Though it's most specifically American soul, not particularly pop. Maybe because there were similar economic issues? I'm not sure, though I should know. I actually took 2! classes in college on the history of rock and roll.

But back to the interview....

BILLBOARD: I WANTED TO ASK YOU ABOUT AMERICAN SOUL AND R&B. WERE THERE SPECIFIC ALBUMS OR SONGS THAT REALLY GOT YOU HOOKED

AS A YOUNG MAN? WHAT REALLY REELED YOU IN AND HOOKED YOU?

Weller: Well, that sort of goes way back to 1966, "Reach Out (I'll Be There)," by the Four Tops, and hearing Motown as a kid. It's been an ongoing love affair for me, really. That connection has always been there, I think. There's a very strong connection between American R&B music and English people. There's always been that really strong bond, for whatever reason. But I don't know if there's one specific record. I mean, I'm still getting knocked out by stuff that I haven't heard before.

*Okay, I just noticed the bit about the performance DVD coming out in February. I'm forseeing myself and my girl, Jen, watching it and fawning, "Fwaaaaah, Mr. Weller," much like Bridget, Shazza, Tom and Jude did in Bridget Jones's Diary with the Colin Firth lake/wet shirt scene in Pride and Prejudice. Only with guitars and Saville Row suits.

Holy crap!

I've been obsessively reading about the CIA-leak case from the beginning, thank fuck, as it is way confusing. I'm not sure what piqued my interest initially- I'm completely and horribly addicted. (I have a sneaking suspicion it was because Amb. Wilson referred to his wife, former CIA agent, Valerie Plame, as "a real-life Sydney Bristow"). I know, shallow. But are you surprised?

I digress.

The team from Firedoglake are in the courtroom for the Lewis "Scooter" Libby trial, and things are getting EXTREMELY interesting. Christy Hardin Smith from FDL is of the opinion that team Libby has made a rather large mistake.

Seeing as she's all whip-smart and stuff. I can't see how she's wrong.

Ted Wells, lead trial counsel for Libby, completely overstepped in making an argument regarding some handwritten notes of the government's witness, Cathie Martin. Libby's trial team had been given copies of these notes a year or more ago, but just got around to asking to see the originals of the notes this past Saturday. Wells was arguing that the copies given by the government were illegible (Fitzgerald countered that they were not and that, were there problems reading any pages, Wells' team had had a year to notify the government and request a better copy, and had failed to do so until last Saturday). Wells then argued that they had not had enough time to read the notes, due to the number of documents which needed review — Wells made a big deal about the sheer volume of documents.

Huge error.

As it turned out, the sum total of all of Cathie Martin's handwritten notes in their original form totaled less than an inch of paper, most of which were not relevant to the proceedings at all. Those documents which corresponded with the government's intended exhibit proffer were a grand total of six pages. In making an argument which was built on a foundation of very hot air, Wells lost credibility with the judge, with the government, and worse for his client, with those in the media and public gallery.

In a town where reputation and power is everything, Libby's entire legal team was diminished in a matter of minutes with this one, petty, groundless and unnecessary stunt.

And.........

All of these arguments were done outside the view and hearing of the jury, which was sequestered in the jury room at the time the motions took place. So there is no question that this misstep has prejudiced the jury in any way, since they will not hear of it from any of the members of the court. But, in all honesty, irritating a Federal judge this early in a high profile trial by stating something completely unfounded and conflating a tiny misstep (that likely was a result of some lack of preparation issue on the part of some segment of Libby's trial team) is a huge error.

And the entire episode led to Judge Walton saying this on the record in open court about Patrick Fitzgerald: you are "one of the most scrupulous prosecutors I have ever had appear before me," in response to the judge having to deal with the, by comparison, unnecessary conduct that Wells pulled over Cathie Martin's notes.

Oh, this could get ugly. *rubs hands together*

Arctics. Glastonbury. Headliners.

I'm acting all "Oh, that's not surprising," but am doing the happy dance at the same time about this announcement from the Eavis family. Yes, the band that my girl, Case, and I saw at the Metro in Chicago last March, is one of the m-effing Glasto headliners. That is chock-full of awesomeness.

Going to break out my "Dancing Shoes" right now!

In a declaration likely to surprise very few, the Arctic Monkeys have been unveiled as one of the acts to headline this year's Glastonbury festival.

When the last Glastonbury took place - the flash-flooded festival of 2005 - the Sheffield band was still four months away from releasing its debut single, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor. Two years on, they will headline this summer's event, topping off their rapid rise with a place on the Pyramid Stage at Michael Eavis' Somerset farm. Icelandic singer Bjork, a veteran of the festival, will also perform.

Hammersmith Palais, RIP

I suddenly want to listen to my Clash albums. Well, more than usual.

Hammersmith Palais - the legendary London music venue immortalised in song by The Clash - is to be demolished.

T
he decision to close the venue was taken by Hammersmith and Fulham councillors in a meeting on Monday.

The building is expected to be bulldozed to make way for office blocks by developers Parkway Properties. No date for the closure has been given.

The venue, which opened after World War I, was hailed in The Clash's (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais in 1978.

This? Effing appalling.

Since there was no mention of New Orleans in the SOTU, the nation would not know that 300 children have been "wait listed" because for the forgotten Americans there is neither enough room or teachers.....

In an exceedingly rare move for a public school system, hundreds of children seeking spots in the city's schools have been turned away -- "wait-listed" -- and told that the campuses have no room, school officials said Tuesday.

In the state-run Recovery School District, where 300 students have been placed on a waiting list since Jan. 8, officials are scrambling to open additional buildings and hire more teachers.

Meanwhile, an unknown number of students have been turned away from the various other types of public schools in the emerging system, including 31 independent charter schools and five still run by the Orleans Parish School Board.

SOTU

I was going to watch Chris Matthews and Tim Russert analyze the State Of the Union address, but I chose to watch something more reality-based. Doctor Who.

And seriously, if Matthews refers to Senator Clinton as 'Hillary" one more time, I'm going to reach through the screen and slap his as-orange-as-Tom-Jones-in the-1970's-fake tan off his face.

Show some respect. Would he call Senator McCain "John?" I'm not thinking he would.

This made me cry

This article about the N'Awlins Saints fans made me bawl like a little kid with a skinned knee. And I say this as a life-long Bears fan- born and raised in a small Iowa town, 3 hours from Chicago.

A fine piece of writing.

Then it hit him, like it hit thousands around this heartbroken town.

"I'm going to the airport," he announced. "They brought hope to this city when nobody else could. The mayor sucks. The governor sucks. The legislature sucks. The president sucks. The only thing that doesn't suck is that team. They brought hope to this city, and I'm going to the airport."

So much in professional sports is canned, and this was something real, something spontaneous and pure. Through a neighborhood they drove, down a winding, dark road to a private terminal where the team's charter would land. Cars parked, one after another, the headlights looking like that scene from "Field of Dreams." Fans brought coolers and bottles of wine, standing in the pouring rain, giving something back to the team that gave them so much.

Not sure which date I'll be attending. Depends on whether Stace (Minneapolis) or Case (Chicago) are available on those dates. Mmmm, Ricky Wilson.

This sounds promising

Although she was in danger of becoming better known for her hard-partying ways and tumbling BMI, singer Amy Winehouse has redeemed herself with a triumphant debut performance in New York.

With her second album, Back to Black top of the charts in the UK, the 23-year old husky toned singer performed in front of a tough New York audience, at venue Joe's Pub.

Depsite showing some nerves, Amy won over the crowd which included rappers Jay-Z and Mos Def, with her jazz-infused vocals perfectly backed by her tight funk band.

Coachella

Oh, this sounds interesting. I could give a shit about the headliners, but Arctics, Arcade Fire, Kaisers, THE HAPPY MONDAYS!!!!, The Good, The Bad and The Queen, "Uncle" Willie Nelson and AMY? Jesus, I'd sell a kidney for tickets!

Rage, Bjork, Chili Peppers headline Coachella

Somewhere in northern Iowa, my brother is doing the happy dance

One of my brothers is completely obsessed with Neil Young. How obsessed is he? To the point where my obsession with Northern bands and Weller resemble a schoolgirl crush. He has, at last count, 40! bootleg recordings from Neil concerts.

So, he's completely over the moon about this....

Long-awaited details about the forthcoming Neil Young Archives box-set have surfaced today. The anticipated release date of 'Archives, Volume 1' is September this year. The collection will feature eight discs, including "Live At the Filmore" (released last November) and "Live At Massey Hall", a solo set from 1971 which is due out on March 26 . Thirty-eight previously unreleased songs will feature on Archives, billed as a 'musical autobiography' of Neil Young.

Tantalisingly, the eight CDs only cover the period from 1964 to 1971, suggesting it is only the beginning of a vast release campaign.
Allan Jones, Editor of Uncut says "This is incredible news for Neil Young fans, like myself, who seem to have been waiting the best part of our adult lives for the release of this archive material. Neil has been talking about it for years. When I interviewed him in 1989, he told me it was coming together and to expect it soon. Which is also what he told me when I interviewed him in 1993. It looks finally like it's s happening at last, though, incrediblly enough. On the evidence of the Live at The Filmore CD, it should be mind-blowing stuff." We'll announce more details about Archives, Volume 1 on Uncut.co.uk as we get them.

The View

Not the talking head show, but the Scottish band.

I was already predispositioned to like them, but then I read this interview and saw the magic words. Oasis and Primal Scream. More specifically, Noel for the former, and Mani for the latter. As my girl Bridget Jones would say (yes, I know she's not a real person), "DING DONG!"

As if to prove they're not just your average fly-by-night buzz band, the View have already amassed a catalogue of famous friends that most fledgling indie bands would castrate their drummers for; Noel Gallagher loves them, they count Primal Scream among their closest compadres (care of one debauched tour together), and it was a leg-up from one Prince Doherty of Tabloidland that started everything in the first place.

Also see the MEN

They've supported the likes of The Kooks and Primal Scream ("the best band in Britain. We went to Mani's house!"), as well as earning plaudits from Oasis.

EP

"Noel Gallagher came and listened to us when we were mastering the EP at the studios," beams Kyle in his munching-gravel voice. "He thought it was cool."

Quite an accolade for the group that originally converged at their local Catholic school as a covers band, blitzing through a repertoire that included "The Beatles, The Stone Roses and Oasis".

This I'd like to hear

He may be a trainwreck, but let us not forget, Pete is very talented.

Pete Doherty played a cover of an Oasis song at a solo show in London this morning, just hours after his latest court appearance.

The Babyshambles star took to the stage at the Rhythm Factory at around midnight, performing a two-hour set from across his career.

Emerging to a chant of "QPR, QPR, QPR", Doherty was backed by friend The General throughout, with Mick Whitnall from Babyshambles also contributing.

Amongst the material played was Noel Gallagher's "Don't Look Back In Anger", plus tracks from the recent "Blinding" EP, "Killamangiro" and "What Katy Did Next".

Libertines favourites "What A Waster", "Can't Stand Me Now" and "Time For Heroes" also got an airing in the lengthy set, according to the NME.

The Hanson Brothers

From Slap Shot. What, did you think I meant the little boys from Oklahoma?

Nasty

For those of us that read the progressive blogs, the creepy-ass 'Purity Balls' are old news. They were also featured in this month's Glamour. But now, they have a boy-mommy equivalent. And, you guessed it, they're still fucking creepy and sexist as hell.

That's right. There's now an event, sorta like a Purity Ball, only for boys and their mothers: the Integrity Ball. Why is this glamorous evening not called a Purity Ball, too? Because it's not up to young men to stay "pure." They just have to seek out a wife who is:

Baker told the young men that the women they had come with, their mothers, were somebody’s daughters, and they meant the world to those parents. He further told them that when they date a girl, she is somebody’s daughter, and they care deeply for her.

Baker also told them that while they might not believe it at the time, the girl they may date in high school is probably not going to be the one they will marry. “So you’re dating someone else’s future wife,” he told them. He also told them that someone else may be dating their future wife.

“If you knew somebody was with your future wife,” Baker asked them, “touching her in ways you wouldn’t like, pressuring her, how would that make you feel?”

Even though it's a program for boys, it's still all about how young women need to be pure! Notice how they're taught that women always, at every stage of their lives, "belong" to a man. First daddy, then some "future husband" they haven't met, then a husband. The Integrity Ball speakers don't say that men will stand at the altar symbolically accompanied by all of their previous sexual partners. Nope, that burden is the woman's alone, if she hasn't maintained her purity.

Speaking of self-control and the meaning of sex, Baker told the young men, “Having sex doesn’t make you a man. Dogs have sex, but it doesn’t make them a man. Guys, separate yourselves from the animal kingdom.”

Sure, it's good to tell young men that they shouldn't pressure their partners into having sex. But of course it's never acknowledged that their girlfriends might have "animal urges" as well. All of the language echoes the same old abstinence-only stereotypes: "women are passive receptacles who don't enjoy sex" and "men are horny animals who can't control themselves."

I have a confession to make

I dearly love romance novels. My cynical heart adores them, especially those by Lisa Kleypas, Celeste Bradley and Laura Kinsale. But this website, Smart Bitches Who Love Trashy Novels, cracks me up. Seriously, they're on par with the Go Fug girls. Yes, THAT good.

Case in point:

Those Fish are in the Barrel Again

Submissions from The Bitchery, Part I

You find. You email. You attach. You send. We rub our eyes, and take one for the team. The Smart Bitches present a two-part series of reader-submitted cover madness.

Sarah: You’d think there’s only one obvious joke to be made here, but no. Yes, you cut a hole in the box. Then, put the junk in the box.

But then you go buy a different box because clearly that one is way, way too big. And her g-string? Too, too small. I bet it snaps off and flies across the room like an overextended rubber band.

Ewan as Kurt?

Oh for the love of Mike, some of the writers from Rolling Stone online couldn't find their asses with both hands. What is wrong with this blurb?

The endless speculation about who may or may not be in line to play Kurt Cobain in the Courtney Love-approved film about his life may be over. The already rockstar-like Scott Ewan McGregor is rumored to be Love’s first choice.

Yes, someone from Scotland is generally referred to as a 'Scot.' Not a 'Scott,' unless they're actually named 'Scott.'

If I recall correctly, this is by the same writer that said that Glastonbury Festival was in Scotland. Not fucking England.

That being said, I do love me some Ewan as a rock star. See "Velvet Goldmine" for details.

Oh Holy Jesus

The potential for the Brit Awards turning into a giant trainwreck with nearly all my favorite pop and rock stars on that train? HUGE.

The organisers of the Brits are banking on the combustible combination of Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and the Gallagher brothers, as much prized for their catty wit and alcohol-fuelled antics as their prodigious talents, to enliven this year's show. After some bleak years in which they struggled to even fill the nominations list for best British female solo artist, they last night hailed the emergence of a new breed of talented females with attitude as Allen, Corinne Bailey Rae and Winehouse racked up seven nominations between them.

.......

Allen, whose ska-inflected pop attracted thousands to her MySpace page even before her debut single was released, and Winehouse, who has been described as mixing "reverentially classicist musical backdrops with potty-mouthed explorations of the modern mating game", were both nominated in the best album category. Both have become regulars in gossip columns, with Winehouse appearing drunk on the Charlotte Church Show and heckling Bono during the Q Awards, and Allen sparking tabloid outrage when she said she would celebrate her debut No 1 with "gak", a slang word for cocaine. The 21-year-old, daughter of the actor Keith Allen, later said she was joking.

......

The awards will be shown live for the first time since the debacle when co-hosts Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox fluffed their way through the show in 1989.

The shakeup, which also involved boosting the number of British acts at the expense of US stars, will see Russell Brand replacing Chris Evans as host.

He said he was "looking forward to being the ringleader of a carnival of mayhem" and recreating the chaotic scenes of previous years when Chumbawamba accosted John Prescott and Jarvis Cocker invaded the stage during a set by Michael Jackson.

Let me direct your attention to the bolded section. Drunk on Char's show, and heckled Saint BONO. Celebrating with Columbian Marching Powder. How could this not be awesome?

And there's always the possibility that Our Kid and My Beloved Noel will take after each other with cricket bats or leave the stage and heckle the other from the audience. Again.

Glasto headliner rumors

Like the first blossom of spring or the January sales, the Glastonbury rumours start earlier each year. We're barely the third week into the 2007 and already there are reports suggesting organisers already know the full line-up for the festival, due to take place in Pilton in June.

The website declares that Friday's top billing will be given to The Killers, Saturday's to the Arctic Monkeys (with Kasabian just below them) and Sunday's traditional veteran slot to The Who, with Kaiser Chiefs set to act as their limberer-uppers.

They're not the only bands who are rumoured to be playing Mr Eavis's shindig. Festival favourites the Chemical Brothers are rumoured to be closing the Other Stage on Sunday, while Eric Clapton, Madness, The Kooks and the Scissor Sisters have, like a well-fed cow, also been heavily-tipped.

The festival itself, as is its wont, declined to comment on the line-up speculation, saying it would not do so until the official line-up is announced. Tickets don't go on sale for a while, but the controversial pre-registration process is set to start at the beginning of next month.

You Know I'm No Good

a little ditty by La Winehouse, is the free download of the week on iTunes. Go get it. Now. Seriously, she's fantastic. How could you not love a chick that writes a song with an opening bit like this?

Meet you downstairs in the bar and heard,
Your rolled up sleeves, in your skull t-shirt.
You say why did you do it with him today?
And sniff me out like I was Tanqueray.

Cause you're my fella, my guy,
Hand me your Stella and fly.
By the time I'm out the door,
You tear me down like Roger Moore .

I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would.
I told ya, I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good.

Brit Award nominations

Amy and Lily and Arctics, oh my! With added Kasabian, Corinne and Scissors action! And my favorite Mancunians, Oasis! My, doesn't my CD collection fare well? Hot damn, I DO have great taste!

Fools Gold

This isn't all footage from the seminal Spike Island concert, but some is spliced in with studio and concert film. From this clip, it should be obvious why Mr. Ian Brown is referred to as "King Monkey," and why I'm in unrequited love with Reni, John and Mani. Jesus, the brilliance. It HURTS!

God, I love this chick

In a total straight girl sort of way, of course. I swear, if I wasn't already Separated At Birth from my beloved Joy, I'd definitely be S.A.B. from La Winehouse.

You know how 'soul mates' were discussed on 'Sex and the City'- in the episode that Char said that (paraphrasing) that maybe guys were just to have fun with, and our friends were our actually our true partners?

I feel that way about my friends. I've been truly blessed with my girls, Stacy, Casey, Traci, Carrie, J.Mel and Joy, and my guy, Jimmy. Cursed at love, but compensated with truly unbelievable friends. The Goddess has a way of evening things out.

That being said, I think Amy and I could hang. Seriously, the bitch is fantastic. And so is her eyeliner!

Amy Winehouse, 23, was brought up in north London. She was expelled from the Sylvia Young Theatre School and later quit the Brit School where she was studying musical theatre. At 17 she landed a contract with Island Records and her debut album, Frank, turned platinum and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. In 2004, she was nominated for two Brit Awards and won the Ivor Novello Best Contemporary Song Award for her debut single. She has just released a single, You Know I'm No Good, from her new album, Back To Black.

When were you happiest?

Last night on stage.

What is your greatest fear?

Dying old or never meeting Tony Bennett; if I never get to meet him, I might as well be dead.

Which living person do you most admire?

No one. You're all bastards.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

My fickleness and aggression.

Aside from a property, what's the most expensive thing you've ever bought?

My heart back from someone who may or may not have deserved it. I paid a lot.

What is your most treasured possession?

My loyalty.

What is your favourite word?

Fuckery.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Falling in love itself.

What does love feel like?

A disease that consumes you eternally.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

'Pssssshhh' - or, when drunk, 'whatever' and 'dickhead'.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

To the 60s and I'd go out with the Ronettes.

What keeps you awake at night?

Being sober.

How would you like to be remembered?

As genuine.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

That you learn things every day and life is short.

Strange Town

My favorite Jam song. Mmmm, young Weller.

Blazing Saddles

Dear God, I love this movie. "It's Headley!"

Portions For Foxes

Jenny Lewis is so cool, and so is this song.

Good Lord

My fav Brit punks of a certain age, Buzzcocks, have one of their tunes, "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" featured in a commercial.

For AARP. Yes, THAT AARP.

I literally fell off my chair laughing. I don't blame them, most punks didn't make a hell of a lot of money, and you have to pay the rent. But AARP? Hee hee.

Masochism

Whenever I'm feeling self-loathing, well, more than usual, I go on iTunes U.K. and look at all the songs that I covet, that aren't available here in the colonies. Q magazines 'essential downloads for the month' works, too.

For instance, I torture myself with listening to clips from La Winehouse, Oasis (Noel!) b-sides or partial tracks from Little Barrie, Primal Scream's baby Marr guitar player.

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Oh, oh dearie me.....

My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed.

Lily Allen is set to release 'Alfie' as the next single
from her debut LP 'Alright, Still'.

Although no release date has been announced, Allen has been discussing the video for the track on her Myspace site.

Posting about the video, she wrote: "That was quite a lot of fun, Alfie was played by a puppet and the whole thing looks like an episode of...'Tom And Jerry' and 'Roger Rabbit', you'll understand when you see it."

Random

I received this in an email, and am going to attempt honesty. Key word, attempt.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool
