A complicated relationship we've had, we two. The thing is, we're so opposite in personality- she's so reserved, and I'm definitely not; she's so type A, and again, I'm definitely not.

I was always more academic, though she got the better grades. (I am a hopeless slackass) She was the record-setting athlete, but I excelled in speech, writing and drama.

She found her partner her sophomore year of high school, and married him at 21. And I still haven't found what I'm looking for (Jesus, did I just quote U2? I must be upset) at an age a teensy bit above 21.

We drifted apart after I moved back to Iowa from Texas (as to avoid a complete psychotic break). In fact, we really didn't speak throughout her pregnancy, as we're both damnably stubborn, and hold grudges.

When her daughter was born, I had no plans to go see her, but she (not the baby) called me, and begged me to come up. It's not been all sunshine and roses since then, but we've become very close.

So it breaks my fucking heart to hear the news tonight that her second pregnancy- girlfriend gets knocked up so damned quickly- is in the process of ending at six weeks. Things are so different, this time around. I can't stop crying.

Plans that were made- shot to hell. You just never know, do you? Life can turn on a dime.

I meet Sam Rockwell at the Four Seasons Hotel, Beverly Hills. He's almost sexy, but he's odd. He's wearing incongruous clothes. Smart blazer, bashed-up blue cords, thick white socks with shoes. He has wispy longish hair and a strange, sleazy Seventies thick moustache. No, it's not for a part, it's for 'shits and giggles', he laughs. But he has sad brown eyes. Sometimes they dart everywhere round the world, sometimes they gaze intensely, and then they become heavy, eyelids drooping.

Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek has spoken to NME.COM about Pete Doherty's recent drug relapse, explaining that the singer was "distraught" about the event.As previously reported on NME.COM, Doherty was filmed taking heroin on Friday (November 2).He said that the first thing that the singer did when the news broke was sort out a return visit to a drug rehab."He's distraught, he really is," explained Ficek. "But there's no point in dwelling on it - going back into rehab is exactly the way to deal with it."It's a small glitch in his recovery. People don't go into rehab after years of drug use then never dabble again. I support my friend and I hope it's a one-off. He's still in a great, great place and he's still in the best shape I've seen him."

Things that make me go squee!

Oasis will enter London's Abbey Road studios on November 5 to record their seventh album. They have already completed work on two songs set for the album, and have demoed the rest.

On a related note, here's a funny story. Last week, the flower shop had a very large wedding, which coincided with 3 of the other designers being out of town. Which left me and Jen- both huge Oasis fans- left to run the shop.

Friday night at about 8PM, we decided to take a break and watch the following clip. Well, as we were getting the YouTube keyed up, the speakers were acting wonky. I leaned forward to adjust them, and hit the keyboard with my boob. Then everything went sideways. Literally. I apparently hit the Control-Alt-down arrow combo....

It's quite telling that J and I continued to watch the clip, sideways. We're fans. And obviously, were reaching maximum punchiness at that point. This is shortly after we were dancing to 'Chelsea Dagger.' Okay, that's a daily occurrence. Singing to 'Shoot The Runner'? No, that's not uncommon.

Good Lord, are we constantly like that? Oh, dear.....

Well, that's over with

Today, the flower shop that I work at did a rather large wedding. Unlike most of the seven bridesmaid weddings we've done, the wedding party wasn't ginormous, but we had a lot of centerpieces for the reception. 30, actually.

(Now my girl Jen, being all practical and shit, would tell you that 10 of those were very simple and easy to put together, but she's not the one telling this story, is she? And I'm a big old drama queen and have the medals to prove it).

I have been SO paranoid about this week. SO. PARANOID. Why? Because my mom, the shop owner, has been out of town since Wednesday AM, and two of the other designers were gone after 5PM yesterday.

Again, why was I paranoid? Because I assumed that the combination of Big Wedding+Designers Out Of Town would equal F-U-N-E-R-A-L-S.* Faaaaaaarrrrr too tempting for Whomever controls these things. And very little can ratchet up the crazy like a
F-U-N-E-R-A-L.

Luckily, this did not come to pass.

So, this morning. Thank Whomever my youngest brother had the good sense to propose to a lovely girl that works in a floral shop in their college town, and that they came back this weekend. Because his fiance? Is a darling girl, a hard worker, and best of all, takes direction really, really well. So Jen and I put her to work doing the piddly shit that we didn't want to do. And bless, she did it. Quickly. And then asked us what else we needed. I love this girl, though I worry about her marrying said brother, since he's a bigger drama queen than I am.

And Jen and I had the massive advantage of our best friends from childhood and beyond having remarkably low thresholds for fun. Traci and Stacie LIKE working at the shop. AND they have common sense, which as you may know, is not common. So our girls ran the shop while we set up. They are lovely. Not to mention, I came back to a completely immaculate store.** Let me stress this. LOVELY.

So, it was mainly we two who did the wedding pieces. It's safe to say that we got a bit punchy last night. And this morning. There was much singing to Oasis, The View, Kasabian and The Fratellis. Badly on my part. Bit of dancing, too. Again, badly on my part.

Since we had so many reception pieces, we needed 3 vehicles to deliver them- the store delivery van, a van we borrowed from a local dealership (where my family gets all of their vehicles) and my dad's truck, Old Blue.

I drove the pickup. This is hilarious. Why? Let's just say, I'm not exactly a truck-type of girl. And it's really tall. I'm 5'9, and I have to jump up a bit to get in it. So, picture this- woman with a Posh Beckham bob hairdo, charcoal gray sweater, wide-legged dark denim jeans and ballet flats jumping into a Dodge Ram 4X4. A farm truck. Trust me, I looked a dork.

Since it's ancient, Old Blue doesn't have a CD player, so I was forced to listen to the radio. I was dreading this (am used to Sirius Satellite Radio). I shouldn't have worried- on the way to the wedding, I heard the following-

Mark Ronson rounded off the opening night (October 24) of the BBC Electric Proms 2007 with a set packed with guest stars. Opening with two instrumentals including a cover of Maximo Park's 'Apply Some Pressure', the DJ/producer then showcased his recent album 'Version' and assorted songs backed by the BBC Orchestra. "Hello everyone I'd like to welcome everyone to the Electric Proms," Ronson told the crowd. "These are my favourite songs, some I've written, some I've covered, some other people have covered. I only get to do this once and I'm glad you're here."

Phantom Planet's Alex Greenwald was the first guest vocalists, crowd surfing during his cover of Radiohead's 'Just', while singer Adele enthralled the audience with her strong vocals as she debuted her new song 'Cold Shoulder'. Lily Allen's billed appearance did not materialise and instead Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson covered himself as he
reprised his vocals on 'Oh My God'. "My friendly Lily was supposed to be here but she cancelled last minute," explained Ronson. "That's cool, people have lives and stuff, so we got someone who was in town and knew all the words!"

Following slots from Candie Payne and Wale, The Rumble Strips' frontman Charlie Waller brought his band's version of Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black' to the mix."I spent most of the year covering other people's songs, so it's nice to hear a remix back," explained Ronson of the choice. "Charlie did a phenomenal remix of 'Back To Black', I think I like it more than the original now."Waller then joined Santo Gold on a cover of The Jam's 'Pretty Green' with the singers splitting the song's vocals straight down the middle before the Brooklyn-based singer busted out some dance moves at Ronson's request. Gold then performed a duet with The Specials singer Terry Hall, play his Fun Boy Three song 'Our Lips Are Sealed', before Ronson's childhood friend Sean Lennon joined him on The Beach Boys' 'Sail On Sailor'. With The Charlatans' Tim Burgess and Mark Collins on hand to play their own single 'The Only One I Know', Ronson then unveiled and unlikely replacement for Amy Winehouse. Playing TheZutons' cover 'Valerie' from 'Version', The View's Kyle Falconer filled in for the bee-hived diva who is currently touring.

Following an encore featuring a series of songs with regular collaborator Daniel Merriweather including The Smiths' 'Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before', Ronson wrapped up the night with Lennon returning to lead some of the evening performers through The
Beatles' 'We Can Work It Out' - albeit in the style of Stevie Wonder's cover.

The Coral opened the 2007 BBC Electric Proms tonight (October 24) by recruiting Noel Gallagher on guitar for their performance. Playing the Roundhouse in London, the band got Oasis' leader to join them on their song 'In The Rain'.

Introducing Gallagher, Coral frontman James Skelly simply told the crowd "one of our mates is going to play on this one" as the Oasis man sauntered onstage and picked up his cherry red guitar. After adding a solo to The Coral's song, Gallagher simply waved to the crowd as he left the stage to a humble "ta" from Skelly and loud cheers from the Roundhouse.

The legendary guitarist - whose career has taken him from the Smiths, through Electronic to, most recently, Modest Mouse - has been announced as Salford's new professor of music. Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall.

After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members. She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause. She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. Lily Allen is to make her acting debut in a new spoof version of classic Jane Austen novel Pride And Prejudice.

Following in the footsteps of her father Keith and brother Alfie who are both actors, the pop singer will play the role of Lydia Bennet in Jane Austen Handheld. Comedian Russell Brand is to star alongside playing the role of her lover, George Wickham, BBC News reports.

Veteran Hollywood actress Carrie Fisher is set to play Lydia's mother Mrs Bennett, whilst Stephen Fry is to play Mr Bennett.

The roles of Mr Darcy and Lizzie Bennett have yet to be cast in the £2.5 million production which is due to start production early next year.

Most notably however I must tell of my giddy excitement at the fact that we have in our pack's midst the legendary photographer Penny Smith. Pennie? Penny? I should know really. But what I do know is this woman shot the undisputed leading rock and roll photo EVER - Paul Simonon smashing his bass on the cover of London Calling.

Sir Paul: Like me being a bass player. Which now I'm very proud of, it's my role and I'm happy with it. But at first it was the loser role in the group. It's usually the fat guy who stands at the back. So I was a bit unhappy when I got that job, I wanted to be up front with the guitar. But I had such a crappy little guitar, a Rosetti Lucky 7, and it was cheap. My Dad was very against the never-never hire purchase, and was like, 'Pay your way, lad. Never be under an obligation to anyone.' Which was good advice. But the others - John's Auntie Mimi and George's Dad - didn't have that problem - so they would get their guitars. I had this crappy thing which was really just a piece of wood with a pick-up on it. It looked quite glamorous, but we took it over to Hamburg and I think someone smashed it - like early Pete Townshend. Fuck!

you probably first recognized her cropped platinum coif, but it's the sexy rock-chick slouch and effortless personal style that have some folks calling Manchester-born model Agyness Deyn "the next Kate Moss." The Catholic schoolgirl, née Agnes Hollins, cut off all her hair at ten, dyed it pink at fifteen and later sported a blond mohawk.

Discovered while shopping in London two years ago, Deyn, 21, has done ads for Galliano, Armani and Burberry, and quickly became a photographers' darling thanks to her distinctly un-Moss-y joie de vivre.

Deyn, who concocted her name out of two family names, spelled with a numerology twist, found fashion through rock & roll rather than the other way around. She started frequenting Manchester's hipster emporium Afflecks Palace after her older brother, Greg, introduced her to Brit pop. ("I had Oasis pictures all over my bedroom walls," she says. "But I also luuurved Take That.")

Her on-again/off-again musician boyfriend, Josh Hubbard of the Paddingtons, has been teaching her guitar via video chat, and she's started a not-quite-gig-ready band called Lucky Knitwear. Deyn's still refreshingly unaffected by her rising celebrity: "You've just got to take it for what it is. In life, you're going to run into some cunts, aren't ya?"

7. Drank cheap white wine while spazzing about my GRE's
8. Got grossed out
9. Had a mild panic attack regarding the test

'Help!'

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has announced an upcoming exhibit commemorating The Beatles classic film 'Help!'The exhibit will begin on November 16 and features rare memorabilia from the film including George Harrison's original script, shooting schedule, posters and tickets to the film's US premiere.It will also include never before-scene artifacts and set photography shot during the making of the film

Next week, the Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) campaign launches its biggest initiative to date with a 29-track compilation album featuring some of the biggest names in indie rock and underground dance, including Babyshambles, the View, Bloc Party, Lethal Bizzle, the Charlatans, MIA, Hard-Fi, the Enemy and more.

The album is the result of a partnership between the NME and the National Union of Teachers, who claim that racism has reached record levels UK schools and that the British National Party (BNP) is attempting to recruit schoolkids by handing out free racist music CDs at school gates.

Disc one of the album will be cover-mounted on a special issue of the weekly music magazine in shops Wednesday, October 17. Disc two (as well as disc one) will be available shortly afterwards as a free download from www.nme.com/lovemusichateracism. The CDs will reflect the ethnic diversity of the music scene and will feature many specially written tracks and exclusive remixes.

Per The Guardian, no obvious trends emerged from Paris Fashion Week. However, THANK GOD, the chunky heel is still chic. (I cannot walk in stilettos for love nor money).

And while a stiletto heel is a half-hidden menace, a stolid heel - this season's choice - is an open threat. (Fuck-you shoes, rather than fuck me shoes, if you will.)

Scorcese is going to do a biopic about George Harrison. Wow- talk about your must-see films! D'ya suppose he'd consider making a docu about Ringo?

Fresh from his work on the Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones documentaries, Martin Scorsese is set to tackle another mainstay of 60s music with a film about the life and times of the late George Harrison. In addition to his directing role, Scorsese will produce the film alongside Nigel Sinclair and Harrison's widow Olivia.

I never got to know Gianni Versace, but in 1997 I happened to be in New York when there was an exhibition of Versace designs at the Metropolitan Museum, with a big gala after the show. I went with Kate Moss, who was wearing a beautiful old Versace number. It was the most amazing, glittering night out, but the real fun began afterwards,when a few of us went back to the Versace house with Donatella, whom I had never met before. There was me and Kate, and Rupert Everett and Cher, and a guy called Antonio who I think was one of Donatella's cutters, plus a handful of people I didn't know. The Versace house was exactly as I had imagined: impossibly grand and Romanesque. We ended up having a sort of wake for Gianni.

After everybody left, Kate, Donatella, Antonio, Cher and I sat around talking about death and drinking champagne. Kate decided that this should be a real wake and that we all had to sing. I sang an old Irish folk song and Donatella cried. And then Kate turned to Cher and said it was her turn. I've known Cher for many years; I first met her when we appeared on the TV rock show Shindig! in the 60s. She's a wonderful and genuine person, but not exactly spontaneous. So here we were in Nero's Palace, draped over these couches covered with Gianni's leopardskin fabrics, in a vast, marble hall with high, fluted columns, fountains and fresco'd ceilings. And Cher stood up, and my God she looked amazing, plastic surgery or not, and sang Danny Boy. By the time she had finished, we were all sobbing.

'Control'

What's mysterious is how the band found a match for his words in their music. Early on we see Peter Hook (Joe Anderson), Stephen Morris (Harry Treadaway) and Bernard Sumner (James Anthony Pearson) decide to form a band after watching the Sex Pistols in Manchester, but once their brief tuneless phase as Warsaw is over, the magnificently strange Gothic of Joy Division seems to derive not from punk – or even from Iggy Pop, David Bowie or Lou Reed – but from the very clangour of the post-industrial North itself. It was surely destiny that the Mancunian impresario Tony Wilson (Craig Parkinson) should have signed them to a label called Factory.

iTunes embarassment

This post on The Guardian's online edition touches on something that has perplexed me for some time- exactly how "random" is the shuffle function on iTunes?

I think the randomness is somehow directly tied to how much you are trying to impress persons listening. For example, if I was creating a random ten for the amusement of myself and my friends (who know my musical skeletons), I'd be relaxed, and hysterically-named Kasabian b-sides would pop up. Like 'Lab Twat' or 'Sand Clit.' (actual song titles).

Or this could be another item in the list entitled "Crap I Haven't A Clue About."

At the Waverly Inn, the Bank Street restaurant owned by Graydon Carter, diners can request an absinthe fountain, for drinking absinthe in the classical style (with drops of cold water added slowly to turn the absinthe milky and opalescent), or can try it mixed with gin and sour mix in the Absinthe Minded Martini.

Employees Only, the West Village lounge, has taken a similar tack, adding an Absinthe Drip to its menu and replacing the absinthe substitute in its signature Billionaire Cocktail with Lucid.
